The Historic Collection creates each reissue guitar with incredible accuracy. Through extensive research, of countless original samples, Gibson has chosen the most significant elements that best exemplify the look, feel, color, spirit and sound of the quintessential vintage guitar and applied these elements to the Historic Collection.

It is an on going practice to more closely replicate every detail, and in keeping with tradition, variances in color, grain, and naturally occurring flaws in the wood are still present and accepted today, just as they have been through the years.

Undeniably one of the most influential players in the history of metal, Kirk Hammett has expressed unparalleled power, tone and talent in his nearly 30 year career with Metallica. Listed at #11 in Rolling Stone‘s “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Hammett has also proved himself an enduring and multi-dimensional artist, coining timeless riffs and contributing to classic hits year after year in a genre that is more often known for flash-in-the-pan successes and rapid burnouts. Kirk and Metallica have conquered not only the metal world but the entire music universe, becoming members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the process. Throughout this time Kirk has played a 1979 Gibson Flying V. To recreate the Kirk Hammett Flying V in intricate detail, the luthiers at Gibson Custom digitally scanned Kirk’s original 1979 Flying V and precisely measured every significant specification, sparing no effort in the task of reproducing this iconic guitar’s tone, feel and mojo for a limited number of players. Here are the details: Number 69 of the 100 aged versions that will be built, Hand aged Ebony Nitrocellulose lacquer finish, One piece Mahogany body, 3 piece Quarter sawn Mahogany neck, Rosewood fingerboard with the Pearloid dot inlays and Jescar jumbo frets, 70’s style V headstock with no veneer, 24 3/4″ scale length, 1 9/16th” width at the nut, Schaller M6 tuners, Stars Guitars style bridge with stop bar tailpiece, EMG 81 and EMG H pickups, With hardshell case
